It will be a new-look course, with organisers bringing the 700
Event organiser Andrew Mackenzie said it was a move designed to attract more people to the event.
‘‘It is the 15th annual Morley Auto Group Echuca-Moama Triathlon and we are looking to grow it into something bigger and better,’’ Mackenzie said.
‘‘We have seen what Shepparton has done with the 70.3 half-ironman and we are really looking to emulate something like that.
‘‘This year we have moved the race from out of town, into the port to put a bit more focus on it.’’
Mackenzie said there had been 200 entries as of yesterday, with more expected on the day.
Shepparton’s Anthony Rule won the event last year, but has relocated to Queensland, and Mackenzie said organisers were unsure whether he would defend his title.
‘‘It is probably a bit far away for him to get back, but you never know,’’ he said.
The club will have a major drawcard with three-time world champion and Olympian Peter ‘‘Robbo’’ Robertson set to compete.
Mackenzie said he expected Robertson to blitz the field, with his main competition likely to come from the teams category.
The teams section includes groups from emergency services, football teams and gyms.
‘‘He (Robertson) will set the standard, no doubt,’’ Mackenzie said.
‘‘It will be pretty interesting to see whether any of the teams can keep up with him.
‘‘There are a few teams that are super fit, so it might be good to watch if they can keep up with him and even catch him.’’
Mackenzie said the teams element had been a major focus for organisers, with $2000 in prizemoney up for grabs.
