Haley Toulmin rode herself into the harness racing record books when she claimed a heat of the Victorian Monte Championships on Christmas Eve at Maryborough on veteran trotter Andys Favourite.
Toulmin became the first driver-rider to notch her first racetrack win in Australia in a Monte race which are exclusive to ridden trotters.
It was only Toulmin’s third racetrack appearance, having driven Andys Favourite in two lead-up races before the Monte at Maryborough.
Andys Favourite’s biggest claim to fame is winning the 2004 Redwood Classic for Chris Lang Sr, who bred the horse with his wife Sharon.
Chris Lang Jr, the partner of Haley, trains Andys Favourite and said the veteran’s racing career had been resurrected with Monte racing in mind.
‘‘Yes we bought him back into work specifically for the Monte race to see how he’d go,’’ Lang Jr said.
‘‘He’d never been in a Monte race or even ridden on a racetrack before Maryborough and has only been ridden at home by Haley.
‘‘But he went really well at Maryborough and won pretty easily.’’
His latest win, the 16th of his career, was his first since winning at Bendigo in June 2010. He was retired shortly after.
Lang Jr said Andys Favourite would now tackle another heat of the Victorian Monte Championship at Kilmore on Thursday night.
If successful again he will pass the $100
‘‘You can go in as many Monte heats as you like providing there haven’t been enough acceptors for a full field,’’ Lang Jr said.
The final of the Monte Championship will be held on Great Southern Star final day at Tabcorp Park, Melton, in March.
