Solid results at the weekend’s opening round of the Australian Supersport Championship at Phillip Island has encouraged Brad Shaw to compete in June’s second round in Queensland.

The Kyabram teenager, coming off a breakout year where he won the Pirelli Superstock 600 sprint championship and the Superstock 600 C-grade championship, showed he was up to the standard.

In Friday’s qualifying, Shaw was 19th in the 35-strong field.

On Saturday, he had been 15th when he was forced to exit the 10-lap race because of bike troubles.

He bounced back on Sunday, finishing 13th.

Shaw said he was pleased with the initial results.

‘‘We are pretty happy with it,’’ Shaw said.

‘‘We are now looking at doing the next round in June.’’

The event kicks off a busy racing schedule for Shaw, who will compete in the Pirelli Road Race series at Winton Motor Raceway this weekend, ahead of state titles and a possible European trip.

The European trip would see Shaw compete in one round of competition over there, with the flights to be covered by part of his Sport Australia Hall of Fame scholarship he was awarded last September.

The scholarship included a return flight from Etihad Airways anywhere in its network, along with a $5000 sporting grant and mentoring from five-time 500cc world champion Mick Doohan.

Shaw said his European plans were a work in progress.

‘‘With the free flight, we are thinking of going over to Europe and doing a round of one of the competitions over there,’’ he said.

‘‘We will sort that out a bit later, though.’’

He is yet to meet Australian icon Doohan, with their first meeting scheduled for next week.

Shaw said he was eager to pick the brains of his idol.

‘‘I can’t wait,’’ he said.

‘‘It is going to be huge to meet him personally and to be able to have a chat to him and see what he thinks I need to be doing to keep getting better.

‘‘I just can’t wait.’’
