Kyabram’s Rob Sceney and Shepparton Park duo Denis Smyth and Dave Hardie are through to the final eight of the Victorian Open men’s triples while the Mooroopna trio skippered by Bruce Lorains is through to the final 16.
Sceney’s team won two of their three sectional matches, including a 9-5 8-5 victory against skipper Geoff Franze from East Shepparton, to progress.
They played section 12 winner Danny Simmons from Yarra Glen and Sceney, second Smyth and lead Hardie won 7-4 4-12 2-1.
The match reached the time limit before it was fully completed, so the teams only played two of the three ends in the tie breaker.
‘‘We won one set each and we were leading 2-1 when the time ran out,’’ Hardie said.
Hardie was thrilled to be through to the quarter finals, which are scheduled to be played tomorrow.
‘‘I played in the Vic Open with Denis last year and we got put out by the Victorian captain .

When The News went to print last night it was not clear yet who the trio would play in the quarter final, but Smyth was just taking it as it comes.

Lorains team including Ryan Collins and John Stokes did not have time yesterday to play their match for a quarter-final berth.
The final eight of the women’s singles were also decided yesterday, with ex-Shepparton Park player Donna Clarke making it through to the quarter-finals.
Clarke, who is representing City of Echuca, drew two sets with Ouyen’s Debra Vallance before winning the round-of-16 match in a tie break, 7-7 7-7 3-2.

Mooroopna’s Willy Graus made it through to the round-of-32, but was defeated by Fitzroy Victoria’s Nicole Shortis 9-3 10-3.
Shortis had earlier knocked out Shepparton Park’s Di Hands having emerged on top in their section.
Shortis went on to claim the scalp of Australian captain Lynsey Armitage 4-9 7-5 4-3 to progress to the quarter finals.
