By Hannah DriscollOne of Mooroopna Cricket Club’s greats will be remembered on Sunday with the third biannual Kym Sugars Cup Twenty20 match.
Sugars was a three-time Haisman Shield premiership player with the Cats and captained them to the 1995-96 flag.
Past and present Mooroopna players have been named in Darren Young’s President’s XI and Brenton Campbell’s Captain’s XI to take part in the match to honour Sugars, who died in 2001.
Twelve players have actually been named for each team and Young is captain in name only.
It will be the first time the president has not played.
‘‘Generally teams made up of eight current players and four players who would have played cricket with Kym Sugars or coached by Kym somewhere along the line,’’ Young said.
Young said positions on the team were highly sought after.
‘‘We sorted out who was available first and generally we’ll get all our top line A-grade and our fringe A-grade cricketers, so that gets us to the 18-player mark,’’ he said.
‘‘Then we try and rotate ones who come in from outside because a lot of people want to play in the game, so we’ve always got a lengthy list to choose from.
‘‘It’s something the guys have been really looking forward to and are really keen to play in.’’
The match is also a fundraiser for local charity Leading from Within, which formed shortly after Sugars’ death and which Young said had ‘‘been fantastic for our club’’.
Young said the club raised about $1500 for the charity at the last match and aimed to make more than $2000 this year.
He said more than 300 people had already replied to invitations via Facebook and was expecting the crowd to push anywhere between 400 to 500 people.
There will be auctions and raffles throughout the day and all proceeds will go to Leading From Within.
And who did Young tip to win the match?
‘‘The president’s team will win,’’ he said.
There will be a pre-game welcome starting from 11
