Gun riders set to light up Undera

By Hannah DriscollShepparton’s Dakota North and Jackson Milne, Ardmona’s Jake Anderson and Mansfield’s Max Fricke are some of the district riders who will vie for the Victorian Solo Speedway Championship on Saturday night.
Three-time Victorian champion Cameron Woodward, South Australian champion Cory Gathercole and recent Mildura Masters winner Justin Sedgmen are some of the riders headlining the field at Undera Park speedway.
But Speedway Sidecar Riders Association of Victoria secretary Craig Fordham said North, Milne, Anderson and Fricke were not to be dismissed.
‘‘(Anderson) just did a couple of months over in the UK this year. He spent a year over there a season or so ago,’’ Fordham said.
‘‘(North) is in with a pretty good shot. I was watching him ride last week and he’s doing really well. He’s come a long way.
‘‘(Milne will) be at the pointy end, but it’s how he goes on the night.’’
Fricke was promoted into senior ranks this season after a stellar final year in juniors and has made the final at his past two meetings at Gillman in Adelaide and Mildura.
‘‘He did really well in the juniors heading up through the ranks and earlier this year, just before he went into seniors, he was competing in World Junior Championships and finished sixth overall,’’ Fordham said.
Sixteen riders will compete for the championship.
Each one will ride in five heats where they will compete against every other rider and the four entrants with the most points will progress to the final.
‘‘You can be doing great all night and stuff up the final and that’s it,’’ Fordham said.
He said racing on their home track at Undera would have limited advantage for the locals.
‘‘A lot of competitors have been coming up and riding some of the club meetings and getting some track time in,’’ Fordham said.
‘‘Of course the locals will always have a bit of an advantage, but a lot of it will come down to the night.’’
