The stage was set for a hero and a villain, but in the end the Goulburn Murray Cricket match between Cooma and Echuca produced neither.

Echuca needed five runs off the last over to win and managed four, before Wil Jackson knocked over Simon Maddox with the final ball to leaves scores tied at 119.

Jackson’s over had everything — a wide, dot balls, a ball worked down the leg-side for three and the wicket.

It was heartbreak for Maddox, who had shared in an 18-run final-wicket stand with tail-ender Chris Russell, only to fall short of saving the day.

‘‘They did a really good job to get us level,’’ Echuca skipper Brendan Prendergast said.

‘‘We didn’t bat well enough to win the game ... chasing three (runs) an over in a one-day game, you take that any day.

‘‘It would have been really good to win with other games washed out, so it would have been good to have that advantage.’’

The contest was up and down from the start.

Echuca won the toss and sent Cooma in to bat, but opening pair Stephen Barrett (60) and Nick Hubble (13) guided the visitors to 80 without loss.

However, when Robert Hogan finally got the breakthrough it triggered an extraordinary collapse, with not one other batsman reaching double figures, as 10 wickets fell for 39 runs.

Hogan finished with 3-20, Brandon Dixon 3-19 and Maddox 3-22.

‘‘We didn’t bowl badly, (Barrett) batted well,’’ Prendergast said.

‘‘Our five bowlers all did a good job, Chris Russell did well opening the bowling without getting a wicket and the others basically shared the wickets between them.

‘‘We might have given up one chance and a couple of half chances, but they are the sort of chances good sides take.’’

Echuca’s innings was more spread, with five batsmen reaching double figures, while Liam Barrett snared 4-22 for Cooma with the ball.

In Saturday’s other result, Rochester Tigers crushed Bamawm-Lockington United by eight wickets at Windridge Oval, chasing down the visitors’ paltry 43 in just eight overs.

The matches between Tongala and Kyabram Fire Brigade and Moama and Rochester United were washed out and the points shared.

In the final match of the round, Echuca South grabbed its first win of the season, in a two-run thriller at Bunnaloo yesterday.
