Melton's Daniel Wright won the Squash Victoria Regional Development series event in Shepparton for the third time on Sunday.By Matthew Galea
Daniel Wright took out his third Squash Victoria Regional Development series event in Shepparton on Sunday, pipping Corey Robertson to the title.
‘‘It was a good, fun game,’’ Wright said.
‘‘We knew when we played each other that the winner would end up winning the tournament, so we just tried to see who could out-hit the other and have a bit of fun with it.
‘‘I think I was lucky that my fitness got me over the line.’’
Wright, who plays out of Melton, was playing in his first tournament since representing Victoria at the Junior National Squash Championships, which concluded earlier this month, and said the Shepparton tournament was always one he looked forward too.
‘‘It’s the third that I’ve won and I try to get up here every year because the players from here obviously come down to us a lot,’’ Wright said.
‘‘I like it because it’s a different environment and you can get into a bit of a routine playing the same people, so coming out to the country and playing some of the local talent is always good.’’
Squash Victoria High Performance Manager Richard Cagliarini was in attendance and was impressed with what he saw from some of the local talent, particularly Aaron Maidment, Nathan Linder and Ben Ratcliffe.
‘‘I do a lot of talent IDing, and a lot of these players will be invited to attend our training sessions in Melbourne .
Shepparton Squash Club president Daniel Maidment hailed the event a success and one of the most important on the club’s calendar, particularly since it had become affiliated with Squash Victoria last year.
‘‘This has been our biggest for the last few years,’’ Maidment said.
‘‘It’s extremely important for revenue and PR, but more importantly to expose the kids to what sort of talent is coming through the rest of the state, as well as the seniors.’’
The tournament saw matches contested over several divisions in a round-robin format.
While Wright won the division 1 title, division 2 was taken out by Aaron Grima, with Daniel Faux winning Division 3a.
Division 3b was won by Tyler Blanchard, with Ben Ratcliffe winning Division 3c.
Phoebe Taylor took out Division 4a, with Zac Gregory winning division 4b.
Divisions 5a, b and c were won by Hayden Exton, Amy Cargill and Hannah Watt, respectively.
