Shepparton Swans have enjoyed the celebrations of their win over Tatura on Saturday and now it's back to business.By Marc McGowan
Brett Warburton had no intention of stopping the celebrations on Saturday.
The Shepparton Swans coach had just overseen his club’s first Goulburn Valley Football League finals victory in three years and the rooms were overflowing with supporters.
‘‘It’s great, it’s huge. We have got a great supporter base and that’s what I love about it,’’ Warburton said after the Swans’ 31-point elimination final victory over Tatura.
‘‘This is why we associate ourselves with clubs and this is what it’s about. It’s more than just 21 out there and me standing at the front.
‘‘I’m just the person who stands out the front; it’s the people behind me and the Shepp Swans spirit (that matters most).
‘‘It’s a good feeling and the club’s in a good spot. We’ll enjoy tonight and regroup tomorrow.’’
Warburton said it was the Swans’ best performance of the season, given the circumstances.
‘‘This is finals footy and we haven’t been here before, so to win like that against last year’s premier was terrific,’’ he said.
‘‘We didn’t fear them, like I told you on Thursday, but we respected them and knew they had some quality players.
‘‘The thing is the 21 we picked are all very close and we all play for one another and that’s what got us across the line or at least put us in a position in that last quarter to keep running.’’
Warburton praised many of his most senior players, but also highlighted his younger members’ influence.
Defender Nick Calandro, ruckman Mitch Bell and livewire Kaiden Antonowicz were three whose performances he regarded highly.
‘‘Nick Calandro is 18 and you wouldn’t think that. He does the basics very well and that’s all we want our young kids to do at this level. The rest will come in time,’’ Warburton said.
‘‘Mitch Bell rucked all day and didn’t change once and that’s terrific. The pleasing thing as a coach is Kaiden is a terrific forward pocket/goal sneak.
‘‘We all knew he could do that, but his ability, with our injuries this year, to push up high and go through the middle has put another string to his bow.’’
Warburton said Josh Wellington and Daniel Campbell were ‘‘sore’’, but expected the same 21 to play against Benalla in the first semi-final at Rochester on Saturday.
He also credited assistant coach Hayden Best for his ‘‘steadiness on the bench’’.
