Five Shepparton swimmers will hope to make an impact at next week’s Victorian Aged State Swimming Championships.

Address Guthrie will be making her first appearance at the event, which is at Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre, competing in the 13s 100m breaststroke and the 100m backstroke, while Daniel Romeo and the three Swifts — Kalen, Brennan and Carter — will be looking to improve on previous efforts.

Shepparton Swimming Club coach Michelle Swift, and mother to Kalen, Brennan and Carter, said all five had only been training in the 50m pool for the past two or three weeks, but the event would provide them a good chance to evaluate where they were at against the rest of the state.

However, for some, the event will serve as an opportunity to qualify for Open Nationals.

‘‘Kalen already has a qualifying time for the nationals in 100m breaststroke, but he’ll also try and go for the (15s) 50m breaststroke,’’ Swift said.

‘‘Brennan has a national qualifying time in his age for the (16s) 100m butterfly, which he’s ranked in the top three in the state for, and he’ll be trying to add the 200m butterfly to that as well.

‘‘Carter is looking to go close to national times in all his events and he’s doing the (17-18s) 50, 100 and 200m freestyle events.’’

Guthrie is new to the swimming club and Swift believes there is still plenty of improvement to come from the 13-year-old.

‘‘She’s very excited, she loves racing,’’ Swift said.

‘‘They all are excited, it’s one of the major events in the long pool, so it will be interesting to see where they are.’’

Roscoe will be competing in the 16s 50m freestyle, where he hopes to improve his time on the back of an intense training regime.

‘‘They’re literally training up to seven two-hour sessions in the pool, as well as their dry land stuff which is in the gym,’’ Swift said.

‘‘It’s the last major event before Christmas and then we start looking at January when we have the Open Victorian State Championships.’’
