It was a good weekend for Shepparton swimmers at Wangaratta with athletes winning medals and bettering their best times.By Marc McGowan
Eleven top-10 finishes, two medals and many personal bests added up to a good weekend’s work for Shepparton’s swimmers.
Shepparton sent a 19-strong squad to Wangaratta for the two-day Victorian Country Short Course Championships.
Tom Houston claimed a silver medal in the men’s 18-and-over 100
Houston, 20, was more than a second off his best time in the event, leaving Hawks athlete Ryan Dessens (1:05.18) to take gold.
Sixteen-year-old Swift went close to adding to his booty, with an outstanding 2:14.64 effort in the 200
That time, a five-second personal best, would have been good enough for fourth place, but officials disqualified him for a one-handed turn at the 150
Shepparton coach Michelle Swift said her son was ‘‘gutted’’ at the decision.
‘‘We watched the race and couldn’t say he did that, but the official was right there,’’ she said.
‘‘He swears hell and high water he didn’t, but that’s what they’re there for. It was the entertainment for the meet.
‘‘He was stoked with everything and we didn’t know until it was announced, but it’s a rookie mistake and something we go over all the time with the squad about turns.’’
Shepparton’s other top-10 finishers were 14-year-old Carter Swift (eighth in 100
Brennan Swift also came 10th in the 100
‘‘We’re really rapt with how the weekend went and the kids did really well, considering how young the squad was,’’ coach Swift said.
‘‘They really acquitted themselves to the best of their abilities and we can’t be any happier than that.’’
Swift was also impressed with how junior members Connor Hangan, Ollie and Darcie Guthrie and James Hart performed.
‘‘Because we lack that 18-and-over age group, it was nice to have that middle group of swimmers performing and supporting the young ones,’’ she said.
‘‘It was a great weekend and has them all looking forward to the long-course one in January.
‘‘We’ve identified some areas to improve on, but nothing too major.
‘‘We came away quite happy with a lot of the stuff we’ve been doing with our program, but we need to do a lot more on fitness.’’
Shepparton members Houston, Brennan Swift and Jake MacKenna and Shepparton-based swimmers Connie McClelland and Hayley Hogan are contesting this weekend’s Australian Short Course Championships in Sydney.
