Shepparton Rowing Club president David Schier is thrilled with how his club's rowers fared at the Head of the Goulburn Regatta.By Hannah Driscoll
Shepparton Rowing Club president David Schier was over the moon with the club’s results at the Nagambie Rowing Club’s Head of the Goulburn Regatta on Saturday.
Schier had late last week expected to have to withdraw its men’s coxed quad scull team, but the late inclusion of Callum McMinn allowed the team to take part.
It finished the 7.2
It was the first time competing for McMinn and Mitchell Prewett, who were joined in the boat by Thomas Harper, James Worsfold and coxswain Trevor Lange.
‘‘They were very good. They were three minutes behind the winners over 7.2
Shepparton’s D-grade women’s coxed quad crew of cox Dani Beischer, Lily Innes-Irons, Brigitte Bertolus, Mithma Ekanayake and Zoe Kerwin finished in 41.51 and Schier said he was thrilled for them.
‘‘They were excellent. they rowed above themselves,’’ he said.
Another Shepparton rower Nathan Leckie, who is a member of the Nagambie club, raced in single scull and finished in 38.25.
Mercantile Rowing Club retained the female open eight crown, racing down the course in 27.19 and the fastest mens eight crew was Yarra Yarra Rowing Club’s masters who finished in 27.27.
Nagambie Rowing Club’s regatta secretary Beth Walter said she had great feedback from those involved.
‘‘I think they’re learning they can just relax and enjoy themselves at this event,’’ Walker said.
‘‘We had 684 competitors, but I would say we had close to that many in spectators in addition, more spectators this time, more people came along to watch
‘‘Even people from the local area that weren’t involved in rowing at all came to enjoy the band and wine tasting and the spectacle of the boats coming up the river and so forth.’’
Walter said the club was happy with how the event went.
‘‘What we really like about it is it’s not just the rowing race, it’s about promoting the Nagambie region and people can see what’s there, see our river and see the wineries and so forth,’’ she said.
‘‘I know a lot of people will be back to visit the area on their own even when they’re not rowing.’’
Schier said the event, in its eighth year, was continuing to grow in stature and Beth and Mike Walter, Nagambie president Neville Howell and their team of volunteers deserved a lot of kudos.
