Two from two this year and back-to-back.
Does it get any better than that?
Shepparton Park’s Cathy Dudley won her second consecutive Goulburn Valley Bowls Division’s state 60-and-over singles championships yesterday with a 21-14 victory against Mooroopna’s Win McGoldrick.
It was the second win in as many weeks for Dudley after she partnered Di Hands to beat another Parkers pair, Bev Thorn and Bev Cahill, in the state 60-and-over pairs at Murchison last week.
Dudley beat Cahill and Shepparton Golf skipper Jenny Waddell at Tatura on Wednesday in the opening rounds of the singles matches, and Tatura’s Freda Clement yesterday to book a spot in the final.
McGoldrick beat Tatura’s Noeleen Boyd and her clubmate Bernadette Nichols on Wednesday, but a narrow win against Shepparton Park’s Marika Armstrong earned her a place in the final game.
There were times where the it could have been a very different final; Dudley only beat Cahill by one shot and McGoldrick won her matches against Nichols and Armstrong on the final ends.
Dudley, 63, adopted a couple of strategies which gave her the edge over her opponents the past two days.
‘‘I was playing the narrower side most of the day so that it had a nice draw in instead of using the windy side to let the bowl to come right back, so that helped and having long ends because they liked to have short ends,’’ she said.
McGoldrick, who turns 80 in December, took up bowling about seven years ago after an extensive career in pistol shooting and continues to play in Mooroopna’s divison one team.
She had never got past the second round before, so she was pleased with her achievement. But she was disappointed with how she performed in the final.
‘‘I was disappointed with how I played because I didn’t play anything like I played the other three games,’’ she said.
‘‘I don’t know why, I just didn’t play like I did.
‘‘The first three games I’ve never played as well as I did, I’ve been told.’’
McGoldrick said as long as she could still bowl, she would be back next year to try and go one step further.
Dudley will now prepare for the regional final in both singles and pairs at Katandra on November 4 and 6, where she was knocked out in the first round in the singles last year.
‘‘Now I’m a bit more confident than last year; I was a bit nervous,’’ she said.
