Shepparton Golf has shown it will be hard to beat in this season's Goulburn Valley Bowls Division midweek pennant competition with a crushing win against Mooroopna.By Matthew Galea
Shepparton Golf put on a dominant display against Mooroopna to post its second win of the season.
Despite being round four, this was only the second round of mid-week pennant to be played this season, following an interrupted start due to unkind weather.
Shepparton Golf skipper Pauline Naughton was just happy to be playing during her side’s maximum-point, 48-shot win.
‘‘It was a wonderful day, so it was really good to get right back into it today and everyone feels the same,’’ Naughton said.
‘‘We haven’t had a chance to perform and play as a good team, but we all played well today.
‘‘To get a win was really important (given the start to the season).’’
The reigning premier enjoyed comfortable wins in two out of three rinks, but the most interesting battle of the day came between Jenny Waddell and Bernadette Nichols.
Shepparton Golf’s Waddell eventually won the rink 21-20, after chasing Nichols all day, and it was only a fantastic bowl from John Dagger at the last end that settled the rink in Waddell’s favour.
‘‘That was very exciting, so it was a wonderful bonus for us and for Jenny,’’ Naughton said.
Naughton’s rink was the most convincing win of the day, beating Joanne Crowe 48-11.
‘‘We started off like a house on fire, getting fives and sixes,’’ Naughton said.
‘‘It was just one of those days.’’
Naughton was impressed with the way her team was performing despite only playing two games, but said Mal Williams had bowled particularly well.
Mooroopna skipper Lorraine Nicholls bemoaned a lack of division one men bowlers, but accepted that her side was in a redevelopment phase.
‘‘We’re lacking those sorts of players at the club at the moment,’’ Nicholls said.
‘‘We’ve lost a lot of players this year through natural attrition, so it’s just been one of those times at the club where we’ve had to be positive and do the best with what we’ve got.
‘‘The interrupted start hasn’t helped, but I’m on the match committee and we have to abide by what the green keepers say, and if they say it’s inclement weather then we have to call it off.’’
Kerry Sutherland was one of few silver linings for Nicholls on the day, who said that too many players just had off days.
‘‘It happens, everyone can have a bad day,’’ Nicholls said.
‘‘I think we’re still on track for where I thought we’d finish, which was sixth or seventh.’’
