Shepparton Lawn tennis player Olivia Quigley will represent her state at the upcoming Foundation Cup Interstate Challenge.
A standout performance at last month’s Foundation Cup has netted Shepparton Lawn starlet Olivia Quigley a belated reward.
Quigley, 12, was part of the Goulburn region tennis team that finished third at the 13-and-under girls’ tournament in Sale and was selected to represent Country Victoria at the Foundation Cup Interstate Challenge.
It caps quite a calendar year for the Orrvale Primary School student, who was selected in Bendigo Regional Academy of Sport’s tennis development program and got the chance to meet one of her idols, Swiss maestro Roger Federer, while serving as a ballkid at the Australian Open in January.
Quigley said she was looking forward to representing her state and was working on her serve, volleys and forehand with long-time coach Ian McKinnon.
‘‘I was excited (when I found out I was in the team),’’ Quigley said.
‘‘I would like to go as far as I can.’’
Quigley is the third Goulburn player to make the team in as many years, following in the footsteps of Shepparton Lawn’s Jessica Mason (this year) and Kialla Park’s Layla Simmie (last year).
The eight-strong team is made up of four boys and four girls from throughout the 11 Country Victoria regions.
The Foundation Cup Interstate Challenge will be held at the Royal South Yarra Lawn Tennis Club during the AAMI Classic at Kooyong Lawn Tennis Club from January 6 to 10.
Meanwhile, four of Goulburn’s brightest prospects head to historic Kooyong Lawn Tennis Club this weekend for the annual Wayne Arthurs Cup.
The round-robin style competition is a metropolitan and regional team event for 10-and-under boys and girls from across Victoria.
The Goulburn team is Hugo Kearney, Caleb Enders, Joeli Anderson (all Shepparton Lawn) and Jemmah Ryan (Strathmerton).
Goulburn placed to second to powerhouse region Barwon at last year’s championships, which pits players from 11 country regions against each other in singles, doubles and mixed doubles events.
