Dylan Fisher and Mat Rennex make the most of their one tournament they bowl together each year.
Australian representative Fisher, 19, and Victorian player Rennex, 21, yesterday became the first pair to win the annual Plumbtec Two Bowl Golden Pairs tournament twice.
Rennex skipped the pair to nine wins with 162 shots up — an average winning margin of 18 shots — to earn $2500 each.
Fisher’s stepfather, former national representative Todd Simmons, and his partner Brad Peck finished second as the only other unbeaten pair, 107 shots up.
Barooga pair Phil Perkins and Ray Wright finished third with eight wins, a draw and 80 shots up.
Simmons and Peck also finished runner-up when Rennex and Fisher first won the title in 2010.
‘‘We were in the under-18 Victorian team and played together then, so that’s when (our partnership) really started,’’ Fisher said.
‘‘We play for different clubs, so we’re used to playing against each other.’’
Fisher bowled in underage state teams from age 12, won last year’s Australian Champion of Champions competition and this year’s national men’s pairs title with Russell Green Jnr.
Rennex was a long-time Victorian under-18 member and won an Australian under-18 fours title.
Melbourne bowler Fisher is studying sports science at Victoria University in Footscray, while Altona member Rennex is a tiler.
‘‘We don’t play a lot of a tournaments, this is really the only one we play together,’’ Rennex said.
‘‘We just come for a fun weekend away and if we come away with some coin, it’s a bonus.’’
Fisher said the key to dominating their nine matches was consistency across the 21-end format.
‘‘We might have a couple of bad ends, but we never had any where we dropped three or four shots,’’ Fisher said.
‘‘We would only drop one or two and then pick up three or four.
‘‘We were rarely both going bad at the same time.’’
Fisher and Rennex said they would return to defend their title at the tournament next year.
