Mooroopna is over the moon after posting an away victory against Euroa, its second win of the season.By Hannah Driscoll
It was not just the win, but the fact that the day was won away from home that excited Mooroopna’s chairman of selectors Bruce Stranger.
Round five was win number two for Mooroopna in the Goulburn Valley Bowls Division Saturday pennant season, following its opening-round win at home against East Shepparton.
It’s win-loss record is now tied with Euroa and Shepparton RSL, but it is well behind those two teams on shots.
‘‘We did it away, that’s the main thing, we didn’t have to wait to be at home to do it,’’ Stranger said.
‘‘That made our day, performing away from home.
‘‘Like I said at the start of the year we’re aiming for middle of the road. If we finish there we’ve had a good year.’’
Mooroopna skippers Merv Knight and Bruce Robson, who stepped up in Bruce Lorains’ absence, had big wins, more than enough to cover the relatively narrow losses of Allan Donaldson and Bruce Anselmi.
Knight thrashed Ken Sutcliffe 35-19 and Robson outbowled John Groat 30-16.
Lindsay Cocking’s 24-20 win against Donaldson and Peter Naughton’s 23-17 victory against Anselmi meant the day was not a total loss for the hosts.
Sutcliffe was full of praise for his four opponents and said Knight ‘‘hardly wasted a bowl all day’’.
He said that was the ‘‘strongest exhibition against me for the year’’, a statement not to be taken lightly considering Sutcliffe had also met East Shepparton’s Geoff Franze, Seymour’s David Aitkens, Shepparton RSL’s Dennis McHarry and Shepparton Park’s Mark Ryan.
‘‘We were hoping we might sneak over the line against Mooroopna, but they just showed us the way, they were very good,’’ Sutcliffe said.
‘‘It was just one of those days, but my team, including myself, just had a poor day and that was the difference really.
‘‘Merv against me had an exceptional day and the three underneath him played really well, so that was our rink in particular.
‘‘Lindsay Cocking got up again, which was good, and Peter Naughton had another win, so that was good, so there were positives there and Johnny Groat’s missed out the last couple of weeks, but he’ll come back next week.’’
Mooroopna had two changes with Don Stephens and Glen Stewart coming in, but Stranger said there were about six players expected to be away for round seven.
