Shepparton Cycling Club member Ryan Kilpatrick is in good form on track as he prepares for Victorian team trials.MATTHEW GALEA December 24, 2013 4:05am
Ryan Kilpatrick has continued to build on his good form ahead of February’s Victoria team trials with second place in the under-17 A-grade scratch race at Saturday’s Melbourne Cup on Wheels.
Kilpatrick said the second-placed finish was his best at the carnival, which also included an eighth place finish in the open final, and was earned against the state’s best riders.
‘‘It was a pretty good day, I was happy with the result,’’ Kilpatrick said.
‘‘I’ve won a few wheel races at different carnivals, so it’s probably not my best result ever, but I was riding against some really good riders, and it made up for my finish in the open final.’’
Kilpatrick was only just denied first place by Thomas McFarlane after breaking free from the other riders.
‘‘We’ve come around with two laps to go and the pace just dropped off,’’ Kilpatrick said.
‘‘I was on these two kids’ wheels and we were coming down the banks and I just kept going with it.
‘‘I went for home, but this kid rolled me and I thought there was going to be a whole bunch rush past me, but I was quick enough to come in second.’’
Kilpatrick, 15, has been riding with Shepparton Cycling Club for six years and has been travelling to Melbourne to race in carnivals for the past four, with the youngster keen to take the next step with high hopes of making the Victorian team next year.
‘‘Being top age this year, I’m really hoping to make the state team, or at least have a go at it,’’ Kilpatrick said.
‘‘I’m doing a lot of country carnivals, I’ve got the Shepparton one next week and Bendigo the day before that.
‘‘There’s two in Wangaratta and Horsham which I’m down for, but I might not go because of the travel, and then there’s the Echuca carnival on January 11 before the state trials on February 1.’’
The trials will be at Darebin International Sports Centre, with trials held in the 500
‘‘They normally take the best four from all the different races and if you’re in the top four in more than one then you have to choose one,’’ Kilpatrick said.
