Shepparton sporting identity Don Kilgour says he has never seen Deakin Reserve looking as good as it did playing host to the Goulburn Valley Football Netball League grand finals on Sunday.By Marc McGowan
Goulburn Valley sporting identity Don Kilgour says Deakin Reserve’s condition on Sunday rivalled any ground in country Victoria.
Kilgour is the Deakin Reserve Committee of Management secretary and played a role in improving the maintenance of the venue.
‘‘While it usually does look good on (Goulburn Valley Football Netball League) grand final day, sometimes there is a bit of green dye poked around to make it look better,’’ Kilgour said.
‘‘But I have never seen, since ’68, the cricket pitch area fully grassed like it was and it’s all about the management of it.
‘‘The Deakin Reserve Committee has spent a lot of money on buying big sets of covers and we took any management of the ground away from the footy clubs and charged them a bit extra.’’
Kilgour said Greater Shepparton City Council employees deserved the credit for Deakin Reserve’s pristine weekend condition.
‘‘They are the ones who have to take a bow for this,’’ he said.
‘‘As much as we get into trouble from footy clubs for not letting them on at certain times and keeping that centre-wicket area fenced off, the results were there on Sunday.
‘‘People lose sight of the fact this is the marquee ground of the Goulburn Valley and in being such it’s expected to be in top condition for AFL games, GVFL finals and Country Championships matches.
‘‘That’s not easy with two footy clubs using the ground.’’
Officials at Deakin Reserve co-tenants Shepparton and Shepparton United questioned council’s commitment to junior football in The News in July.
The criticism came after council officers rejected separate requests for junior football training at the ground due to its condition.
Club officials have had to apply for use of the ground until now, but Kilgour said that may change in the new agreement set for release next month.
‘‘We’ve got a new arrangement coming out for next winter and the new arrangement will provide for the juniors to train at times with their clubs,’’ he said.
‘‘There will be no Auskick on a Friday night and that gives us more time to allow for clubs to do it.
‘‘It will basically be left to the clubs, but the fact is juniors don’t have a right to train there.
‘‘It will depend entirely on how the ground is, but we’re hoping to set up a regime where there doesn’t need to be anymore applications.’’
Kilgour said discussions were ongoing with Central Park-St Brendan’s Cricket Club officials to ensure the ground was in similarly good condition when the football season arrived again.
