Goulburn Valley cricketers Dylan Grandell, Tyler Larkin and Joe Cousins found the going tough as part of a Victoria Country under-19 side defeated by Victoria Metro last week.By Damen Francis
Victoria Metro took made the most of some country hospitality to dominate the annual Cricket Victoria Country v Metro series at Barooga last week.
The city boys whitewashed their country counterparts 3-0 in the under-19 competition and claimed a 2-1 win at under-17 level.
It was a tough week for local trio Dylan Grandell, Tyler Larkin and Joe Cousins, who were part of the under-19 country team.
Grandell struck 21 not out off 16 deliveries at number five in the opening day’s Twenty20, as Country reached 5-113 in pursuit of Metro’s 4-153.
The Waaia top-order batsman made nine at first drop in Tuesday’s one-day match, in which Country slumped to a 115-run defeat, and just three opening the batting in the 80-over match.
He also finished with 0-6 from two overs in the five-wicket loss.
Larkin, of Central Park-St Brendan’s, made four, a third-ball duck and 20 in his three hits and took 0-25 from three overs in the Twenty20.
Delatite all-rounder Cousins was wicket-less for the series, recording figures of 0-18 (from two overs), 0-26 (eight) and 0-48 (eight) and got a second-ball duck in his only chance with the bat.
The series is considered a key selection tool for state teams to attend the Cricket Australia National Championships and represented a wonderful opportunity for players to impress the coaching staff.
Larkin, who was named Cricket Shepparton’s Under-23 Cricketer of the Year last season, said it was a great experience and matches were more competitive than the scoreboards indicated.
‘‘A lot of country guys play district cricket, so it was great to get some tips off them and the team jelled really well,’’ Larkin said.
‘‘It was pretty difficult having had no mid-wicket practice for a few months, but that 20 gave me a little bit of confidence I can compete at that level and hopefully next time I can turn that 20 into a 60 or more.’’
Cricket Victoria Academy coach Jarrad Loughman led a talented coaching panel.
Larkin said Loughman spent a lot of time observing how players adapted to certain situations, not just keeping tabs on runs scored and wickets taken.
A final trial match will be played in Melbourne on October 13, with the 13-player Victorian squad to attend the national championships to be announced at the end of the month.
