Echuca Murray Bombers will finalise their coaching arrangements for next year at a committee meeting today.By Matthew Galea
Echuca will decide on its new senior coach at this morning’s committee meeting.
The Murray Bombers are one of seven Goulburn Valley Football League clubs that will have new coaches next year and club president Brett Stevens is looking forward to today’s decision.
The senior coaching role has been vacant since Cameron Stewart left the club at the end of last season, with his side managing only one win this year against winless wooden spooner Shepparton.
Stevens was tight-lipped on who the candidate would be, but said the new leader would have a promising squad to work with and would not be weighed down with expectation.
‘‘We had a heap of injuries this year, but Simon Buckley has signed on for another year, Matt Pollock has signed on for two more years, and the only player we’ve really lost is Sean Christopher, and he only played a couple of games at the start of the season,’’ Stevens said.
‘‘At this stage, we’ll have nearly everyone else on board again for next season.’’
Stevens said the club was hoping to lure back former junior and ex-Greater Western Sydney player Ben Reid, who won the best-on-ground medal in Echuca’s one-point loss to Kyabram in the 2009 under-18 grand final.
‘‘We’re restricted by finances and it’s been hard without having a senior coach in place, but as of tomorrow we’ll be going flat out with our recruitment,’’ Stevens said. ‘‘Our aim is just to do a bit better than we did last year.’’
