Bunbartha father and son combination John and Matt Newberry enjoyed a big couple of nights last week with winning doubles at Shepparton and Bendigo.By Gus Underwood
Bunbartha father-son John and Matt Newberry have been on a red-hot streak in the past week.
Not content with landing a training and driving double last week at Shepparton, they repeated the welcome dose at Bendigo two nights later.
Concession reinsman Matt, 19, drove all four winners for his father in his most successful period of driving since he took up race driving about a year ago.
At Shepparton , the Newberrys struck with Classic Icon, a 28-1 chance in a C4-C5 class race, and then buttered up in the following race for C1 class pacers to win with Hezfullarunning, who was also at nice odds of 8-1.
The Newberrys had hardly finished savouring those wins when they doubled up again at Bendigo on Saturday night.
They won with On Fire Within in a C1 class race and then produced Top Venue to notch his maiden win at his seventh start.
On Fire Within was also at healthy odds of 8-1, while Top Venue was a $4 chance.
Matt has driven Top Venue in all his starts to date, but it was his first win in three drives on On Fire Within.
Classic Icon, who provided Matt with his first win as a reinsman, has been a good horse to the impressive young reinsman, who has driven him to five of his seven wins, with three of these wins at cricket-score odds.
Matt’s latest four winners have resulted in him jumping into sixth place in the state concession drivers’ premiership with six winners, but still seven wins off the pacesetter Jason Lee with 13.
Matt has 12 career wins to his credit and has already driven as many winners this season as he did the entire last season.
With his father inconvenienced with back problems in recent weeks, Matt has taken over a lot of the stable driving, a trend that’s likely to continue into the future
‘‘I’m learning a lot and I just want to keep on improving,’’ Matt said this week.
The Newberrys will be seeking more success this weekend, with Matt driving Hezfullarunning and John reining trotter Just Call Me Earl at Melton tonight and Matt looking for another win on Classic Icon from an ideal draw tomorrow night at Shepparton.
