Shepparton United forward Jason Eagle has kicked six goals against Rochester to bring up his century for the season.By Hannah Driscoll
Jason Eagle finished with 99 goals the last time he played a full season in Goulburn Valley Football League in 2010.
The Shepparton United forward finished with a premiership, but not a ton, that year and finished this home-and-away season with 94 goals.
There seemed little doubt Eagle would kick his 100th this season after he slotted five on Saturday as United, with an elimination final win against Rochester in the bag, counted down the clock to a semi-final berth.
The only question remaining was would he do it on Saturday?
‘‘It was six I had to get, but when I got on 99 a few of the boys were telling me,’’ Eagle said.
‘‘It made me a little bit nervous.’’
In the end Eagle played on to boot his 100th and his teammates immediately swarmed to the forward line to congratulate the 27-year-old.
‘‘I think I got 1.4 in the last quarter, so everyone was getting stuck into me, but they were just missing by a little bit,’’ he said.
‘‘I was probably meant to get it that way that I got my 100, playing on.’’
One of Eagle’s shots on goal hit the post and he admitted ‘‘I was actually nearly celebrating before’’.
Goal-kicking is all about confidence for Eagle, who says he has never had a routine for taking set shots.
‘‘A few footy clubs I’ve been at have tried to teach me a routine, but I just haven’t been comfortable with it and it plays on my mind too much,’’ he said.
‘‘I think, for me, I just have to relax and go back and block everything else out that everyone’s saying, which obviously people get stuck into me out on the ground, but you just block it out.
‘‘It’s just confidence with me. If I get my first one and I get a bit of a run on then I’m on.’’
The win has not only propelled the Demons into the semi-finals, but they will also be playing for a spot in the grand final after Shepparton Swans defeated Tatura.
Eagle said United’s form was good going into finals and he himself kicked 22 goals in the final two games against Shepparton and Mooroopna.
‘‘We struggled a bit in the middle of the season with the loss here (at Euroa) and there was another couple of bad losses that we had and a couple of draws,’’ he said.
‘‘But the last month I think has been really good form heading into the finals, so I thought we were fairly confident today.
‘‘We knew how we had to play and I reckon that was one of our best team games for the year to be honest.’’
