The Shepparton Greyhound Racing Club track is set to light up tonight with a star-studded line-up chasing the rich Shepparton Cup spoils.By Matthew Galea
Carl McGrath does not play football, but he is excited about Shepparton Greyhound Racing Club’s grand final tonight.
The Shepparton Cup is one of the biggest nights on the club’s calendar, which the club manager said offered a great opportunity to show off the club’s great facilities to new people.
‘‘Hopefully the weather will be kind, but we’ve set up marquees and we’ll have food so people will be looked after, even if it is wet,’’ McGrath said.
‘‘We’re rapt with the final field, too, so people will get to see some real quality racing.’’
The field, which includes Traralgon Cup winner Paw Licking, who posted the fastest qualifying time of 24.92
‘‘There is terrific depth,’’ McGrath said.
‘‘We’ve got an Adelaide Cup winner in Spud Regis who couldn’t qualify, so that just shows how good the field is.’’
Clone Your Own is one of three dogs in the running to claim New Zealand Greyhound Racing’s Greyhound of the Year award who McGrath said had become a real crowd favourite in Australia during the past two weeks.
‘‘This will be its second final start in Australia and it’s a real classy greyhound,’’ McGrath said.
‘‘He has a great running pattern in the way that he often comes from behind which the crowds love.’’
Paw Licking is the bookies’ $3.20 favourite after its impressive time in the qualifying heats and possesses blistering pace out of the blocks.
Ronan Izmir is a narrow second favouriteat a price of $3.40, which McGrath believed represents great value.
‘‘It’s going to be between Paw Licking and Ronan Izmir, I think, but I have a slight inkling to Ronan Izmir,’’ McGrath said.
‘‘He should get a clear run out of box eight, and I think Paw Licking will have to get the quickest start to win.’’
As well as the cup final, the club will also host seven feature races, including a 390
There will also be a consolation cup, the Ron Nestor Memorial Cup, which will be contested by dogs that did not make the Shepparton Cup final.
Eight children will also be drawn out and allocated a greyhound for the cup final, with the first three past the post winning a pushbike.
Eight adults will also be allocated a dog, with the winner winning a television.
