Riders have their foot on the pedal ready to compete at the Cycling Victoria Victorian School Championships in Shepparton today.By Matthew Galea
Today Shepparton will host the BMX segment of Cycling Victoria’s Victorian School Championships for the second time in three years.
This is the third time BMX has been incorporated into CV’s Victorian School Championships.
The event is the fourth of the championships, following events held in the western and eastern suburbs of Melbourne and Warrnambool.
The state final will take place next month in Melbourne.
‘‘We use these zone events as a development and participation tool as they are events in their own right, not qualifiers for finals,’’ CV BMX co-ordinator Ben Rogers said.
‘‘We have a split of expert or licensed riders, such as members of the Shepparton BMX club, and we also have novice riders who come in from local schools.’’
Rogers said he expected 75 riders for today’s north zone event, which he said was in line with expectations for regional Victoria.
‘‘It just gives us a chance to introduce novices to the track,’’ Rogers said.
‘‘They don’t literally qualify for the state final, but they can progress through if they wish to go to Melbourne and take part in the state finals.
‘‘Elite riders have to ride in one of the zone events, but novice riders can just come down to Melbourne.’’
Although today’s event does not act as a qualifier for state finals, participants above the age of eight will still be timed and given scores.
