Teams warm up before bowls finals

CBD and GV pennant races about to be decided

Seymour

This was the last game of the GV midweek Pennant before the final series.

The team had a brilliant win over Shepparton RSL, winning all three rinks, and has finished on top of the Division Two ladder.

Well done, girls — a great effort.

The Maroon side had a bye and will be playing at Broadford in the last game of the season this week. Seymour Blue was at home to Seymour Gold in their penultimate game for the year. The Blue team was defeated by Gold in a very close match. One rink up, one down and one drawn.

Don’t forget twilight bowls on Wednesday evenings — it’s a great evening, now that the weather is turning cooler.

The Friday members’ night was well patronised again this week. The $120 Members draw will again increase to $140 as Terry Smalley was not at the club that evening.

The first Barefoot Bowls Night was held on Friday evening. We were very pleased with the number of players there to test out lawn bowling. They all enjoyed themselves, with quite a number vowing to return next week.

Some extra assistance from members would be greatly appreciated.

During the week, Seymour hosted the final of the ladies’ and the men’s state singles.

Jan Cockerill (Wallan) was the victor over Marika Armstrong (Alexandra) in the former while in the men’s final Steve Duncan (Wallan) defeated Greg Gilmore (Alexandra).

On Sunday the final of the state pairs was played with the Alexandra team of Judy Shelley and Margaret Legge being triumphant over Ann Argent and Marika Armstrong from Eildon.

We are building a club as well as a clubhouse.

I’ve had a report from Two Hats at Forster in NSW.

The Victorian team has won all the triples so far, one person is left in the singles and they have won three out of four tests with one to play.

Our guys are due back in Seymour on Friday.

Our very successful annual tournament was held on Sunday with a full house of 16 teams; the winners after play-offs were the team from Alexandra of Dick Gilmore, Larry Scott and Greg Gilmore (skipper). The runners-up were a team from Essendon.

Although Division One finished the home-and-away season on top of the ladder, we had a loud wake-up call on Saturday when the team went down to Wallan by seven shots.

We go into the finals this week with a double chance, playing Alexandra at the VRI Green.

The VRI Navy team also finished the season on top of the ladder in Division Two, so it was disappointing to have a walk-over from Yea for the last game of the season.

Navy also has the double chance playing Seymour Maroon at our Number Two green.

Good luck to both sides in the finals.

VRI Blue, although not making the finals, had a competitive and enjoyable season, having some great victories during the year.

To take advantage of the home finals this Saturday, all pennant players are requested to practise on the appropriate greens during the week.

Congratulations to our two midweek pennant sides on making the finals, a very fine effort for a small club.

Division Two played and defeated ladder leader Shepp Golf last Tuesday at Shepparton to give itself a fighting chance of playing this week in the finals.

Unfortunately, Division Four couldn’t achieve a win but their place in the finals was secure.

Saturday pennant sides were unable to put wins on the board but continue to labour long and hard in their efforts each week.

Division Three ventured to Shepp RSL to ply their trade on that club’s synthetic surface but only one team enjoyed the taste of victory.

Division Five welcomed Shepp Park, and two of the three teams were successful, but their combined winning margin wasn’t enough to cover that of the losing team.

The club bids farewell to Bill Clark and Fay Francis who are moving interstate — we wish them all the best but will miss them around the club.Nagambie

George Pianta said to me some time back that he would love to win a major event on the new synthetic green named in honour of his daughter, Debbie.

Well, he has combined with John Dennis to win the WL Forbes memorial pair.

They both played very well as did their opponents, Des Fothergill and Robert Page, in a very high-class game of bowls that was a pleasure to watch.

Well done to all concerned.

The Division Two team was down in numbers but had a good win over Dookie, while the fives, who were well under-manned, could not beat Mooroopna on that side’s home green.

The fives now have a mammoth task of keeping their place in the four as they play leader RSL White on Saturday, while Stanhope, which is hot on their heels, plays Murchison.

Division Two plays Tatura away.
