By Chalpat SontiThe trees at Jubilee Park provided not only welcome shade but a beautiful setting for Avenel’s Australia Day ceremony.
The crowd of about 70 people was treated to two entertaining speeches, with the first from 2010 Victorian Senior Australian of the Year, Nigel Dick. He spoke of the town and its major organisations, including the primary school and sports clubs.
Next up was Len Underwood, who reminisced about his days at Avenel Primary School around the time of World War II.
The town’s Australia Day awards were then handed out.
Sandy McKenzie was named Citizen of the Year, particularly for his work with Landcare and Avenel Action Group.
In his speech, Mr McKenzie said while he was honoured to receive the award, there were others who deserved it in the community, having nominated someone else himself.
He also paid tribute to volunteer firefighters.
Georgia Harcourt, the Euroa Secondary College captain for this year, was named Young Citizen of the Year in the 15-25-years age group, while Bonnie Dawson won the 0-15-years age group.
Both are involved in Avenel’s junior fire brigade and netball, among a host of other responsibilities.
Avenel Bowling Club was a popular winner of the community award for its 50th anniversary celebration.
It was hard to wipe the smile off the face of Bonnie Dawson after she was awarded Avenel's junior citizen of the year (0-15 age group). Anne Douglas congratulates her.
