KDCA winless at Country Week, but ...

Kyabram went winless for the second year in succession at Melbourne Country Cricket Week, but KDCA coach Lawrie Casey wasn’t disappointed with the young squad’s endeavour in the series.

Kyabram went winless for the second year in succession at Melbourne Country Cricket Week, but KDCA coach Lawrie Casey wasn’t disappointed with the young squad’s endeavour in the series.

Kyabram lost its first three games with its fourth match last Thursday against Mid West at Melton washed out when in the balance.

‘‘Our bowling and fielding was up to scratch but we just didn’t have the batting depth or big hitters at times when needed,’’ Casey said, summing up Kyabram’s performance in the series.

‘‘But we had a very young squad and a lot of these players would have got a lot out of it. We had our chances to win games so it was a bit disappointing we couldn’t capitalise on some of the situations we got ourselves in.’’

Casey also praised first-time KDCA skipper Tom Roberts for his leadership in the 90th annual carnival.

‘‘Tom had the respect of all the players and did a very good job as far as the players and I were concerned.

‘‘The association would also like to thank the Kyabram and Tongala businesses which helped finance the trip,’’ added Casey.

With a merger with the Campaspe Cricket Association a possibility, it could well be the last time the Kyabram association competes as its own entity in the series in which it has fielded a side ever year since its inception in 1922.

Paul, Scott top performers

Paul Parsons and Scott Hearn were the KDCA’s chief performers at the annual Melbourne Country Week series last week.

Parsons’s five trips to the wicket produced 109 runs, including the highest score of the week — 58 against South West in a washed out game last Thursday — while Hearn with seven wickets, which included a hat-trick, was the top wicket taker.

Opener Stuart Rixon with 102 runs in six trips to the batting crease was the only other Kyabram batsman to top 100 runs for the week.

Hearn’s seven wickets were at the economical cost of just over 12 runs per wicket.

All of the KDCA scores from Melbourne are in the sports score section of today’s Free Press.
