Moama leads the pennant charge
Moama is sitting in prime position to claim the Campaspe Valley Bowls Division pennant title this season as the season resumes this weekend.
By Zach HubberWith only a third of the Campaspe Valley Bowls Division season to go, finals positions are beginning to cement themselves.
Having lost to City of Echuca in last season’s grand final, Moama is leading the charge at the top of the ladder with just the one loss on 158 points.
The 2010-11 premier Tongala sits in second place on 143 and reigning premier City of Echuca is right behind in third on 141.
The gap then opens to reveal Rochester (93) in fourth, followed by Mathoura (87), Deniliquin (83), Rich River (72) and Ky Valley View (15).
The top three sides will all face off again before the season is out, while the battle for fourth could go down to the wire.
Mathoura’s 92-86 win against Rich River in the final round before Christmas was an important result and the team’s clash against Rochester in the final round could prove a finals decider.
But Mathoura must face the top three sides before then, while Rochester faces just two, meaning Mathoura must take a scalp or potentially rely on a final round victory.
The top three teams should be safe, but the order in which they finish is far from certain.
City of Echuca will play the bottom three sides again before the season is out, while Moama and Tongala play just two.
But upsets have occurred this season, most notably City of Echuca’s loss to Deniliquin in round two.
With a big six rounds to go, everyone will be keeping a close eye on how each team and player performs leading into late February.
