Moama claims CVBD division one premiership trophy
Moama Bowling Club has claimed the 2012-13 Campaspe Valley Bowls Division section one grand final.
By Zach HubberMoama Bowling Club underlined its division one minor premiership when it claimed a one-shot victory in the Campaspe Valley Bowls Division grand final against Tongala at Rochester on Sunday.
The scores were locked at 92 apiece coming into the final end, with Moama’s Matt Liverton launching the final bowl of the day to clear Tongala’s shot bowl and deliver his team the AJ Lawford shield.
Liverton, who is also chairman of selectors, said it was a special win.
‘‘I did say to the boys that I’d be happy to lose our rink and win overall and that’s what happened, so it all worked out well,’’ he said.
‘‘It’d have to be one of the biggest highlights without a doubt, especially being the last end and bowling the one to finish it off. You dream about those sort of things.’’
It was Liverton’s third division one premiership with Moama after spending more than 15 years with the club.
He said he became nervous throughout the day as Tongala pegged back Moama’s lead.
‘‘You definitely get your doubts when they start to come back like that,’’ he said.
‘‘You wonder if you’re going to hang on because they rushed home at us.
‘‘It was lucky it was 100 ends and not 102.’’
Liverton praised his players, particularly Neil Leonard, who missed the final due to a knee reconstruction earlier in the season.
It was Moama’s only Saturday pennant title from the weekend after the club clinched the divisions two to five titles last season.
