Goulburn Murray Cricket’s inaugural Twenty20 competition will come to a close today when four teams contest two semi-finals and the subsequent grand final at Rochester.

Windridge Oval will see Fire Brigade and Rochester United do battle in the first semi-final, while Stanhope and Tongala will clash in the second semi-final at Rochester Recreation Reserve, with both matches starting at noon.

The final will be played at Windridge Oval at 3.30pm between the top two sides, with the winner to walk away $700 richer and the runner-up $300 richer.

GMC vice-chairman Colin Price said all four presidents of tomorrow’s competing clubs had been impressed with the Twenty20 format.

‘‘They think having all three finals at the one venue is a great idea and they’re certainly looking forward to the day,’’ he said.

‘‘I think it’s been excellent so far. It’s been a bit of fun and there’s been some pretty close and tight, tense games.

‘‘You wouldn’t have expected Moama to get rolled last week after making (about) 170.’’

With no cricket being playing in the district tomorrow, Price said he was hopeful of seeing a decent crowd.

‘‘People should expect a high standard of cricket in what is a really nice environment in Rochester,’’ he said.

‘‘Realistically a couple of hundred people would be great.

‘‘Rochester Tigers are putting on catering and refreshment facilities for everybody, which is great by them.’’

One of the concepts of the competition has been clubs bringing in players from other associations to compete at the Thursday night fixtures.

Price said the notion had been used by the former Kyabram and District Cricket Association clubs for some time, but that the Campaspe clubs were less aware of the concept.

‘‘It would be great if we could encourage the clubs to do a little bit more work earlier in securing the big names or celebrity players,’’ Price said.

He added GMC was hopeful of playing next season’s finals under lights, with Echuca’s Victoria Park the frontrunner.

‘‘Originally we thought the final might be played under the lights at Kyabram, but obviously they joined the (Shepparton) league,’’ Price said.

‘‘There are strong rumours one of the Campaspe grounds will have lights next year and we’re very hopeful that’ll eventuate.

‘‘We probably missed out hosting Premier League cricket because of the format they used, which required lights.’’

Today’s matches will be the last for 2012, with the season to resume on Saturday, January 12.
