Bunnaloo faces tough challenge against Echuca
Echuca is coming off three consecutive wins in the Goulburn Murray Cricket competition. Playing at Victoria Park, the side faces Bunnaloo.
By Zach HubberBunnaloo will meet a confident Echuca at Victoria Park tomorrow, with the home side coming off three consecutive wins since being being soundly defeated by Tongala in round one.
The most notable of Echuca’s wins was its eight-run victory against Moama last week, which propelled the side to second on the Goulburn Murray Cricket ladder.
While the win was sweet and the bowlers, particularly Simon Maddox, dominated, Echuca’s batsmen still folded on day one.
Besides Ben Langley’s 59 batting at number five, the rest of the top order battled to make an impact.
Opener Adam Jones will return to the side, with his last outing resulting in 62 runs against Bamawm-Lockington United.
Jones will be joined by Chris Russell, but wicket-keeper Shaun Hon will miss through absence and Rob Hogan through injury.
Echuca captain Brendan Prendergast said he was looking for a better batting performance than that against Moama.
‘‘Certainly our last two games have been polar opposites with our batting,’’ he said.
‘‘Against Bamawm everyone made a contribution and we made 330, but then only a couple of guys contributed against Moama and we made 150, so the batting is definitely going to be the focus.’’
Despite rain forecasted for today and early tomorrow, Prendergast said the ground should hold up well regardless.
Meanwhile, Bunnaloo will be hoping for a stronger performance after toiling against an in-form Rochester Tigers line-up last round.
Adam Thompson and Brad Jones did their best with the bat, but the team proved no match for the Tigers’ bowlers and was dismissed for 139 in the 52nd over.
The Bunnaloo bowlers also battled on day one against the opposition batsmen, with the Tigers racing to 331 at a run rate of 4.93 an over.
But there were more promising signs at the end of day two, with Bunnaloo taking 4/97 when the Tigers decided to bat for another 20 overs.
Echuca took bragging rights in the two encounters against Bunnaloo last season, winning by 66 runs and six wickets in the one and two-day matches respectively.
