Jane Chalmers and Olivia Wright are Sportstar 2013 nominees.By Geordie Cowan
Senior — Jane Chalmers
Echuca’s Jane Chalmers has had a terrific year in basketball, with two excellent seasons at national and state level.
The 30-year-old was a member of the Bendigo Spirit side which won the Women’s National Basketball League title in March.
Backing up straight away from that, Chalmers captained the Bendigo Lady Braves to an eastern conference win in the South East Australia Basketball League, before finishing runner-up overall.
Having barely any time to rest between seasons, Chalmers went straight back into preparing for the coming Spirit season with a pre-season match against China.
‘‘It’s easier to play 18 months in a row in a winning side,’’ she said.
Junior — Olivia Wright
Tongala’s Olivia Wright competed at the School Sport Australia national swimming championships in Adelaide.
Because she attends Moama Anglican Grammar, she competed with the NSW 12 years team and won a silver medal swimming the butterfly leg of the 200m medley relay.
Olivia also finished seventh in both the 50m butterfly event and as a member of the 200m freestyle relay.
The 12-year-old travels with her parents to Bendigo every day to train — a round trip of about 1500km a week.
It was the second time Olivia had competed at the school nationals, after representing Victoria in 2011 when she was attending Tongala Primary School.
She is now aiming to qualify for the Australian Age Championships in Sydney next year.
