Picola and District Football League has voted to take in Murray Football League side Tocumwal.By Luke McManus
Picola and District Football League has allowed Tocumwal to join its ranks.
Tocumwal’s application to cross from the Murray Football League was ‘‘unanimously’’ accepted following a meeting at Barooga Sports Club on Monday night.
Tocumwal, which failed to win a game in 2013, was granted permission to compete in the league’s North West division after a ‘‘lengthy deliberation’’ between the PDFL board and its existing 16 club delegates.
The MFL board is expected to provide the final tick of approval at its annual general meeting on December 9.
‘‘It was a board decision in which Tocumwal received a majority vote,’’ PDFL president Shane Railton said.
‘‘We’re always looking to grow as a football league
‘‘It’s something we’re very mindful of and don’t want to happen.’’
The ‘‘long term benefits and security’’ Tocumwal will provide to ensure a division split within the PDFL was one of four factors taken into consideration during the application process.
The football club’s location, financial capabilities and the district’s population were also discussed.
‘‘All of those elements were considered,’’ Railton said. ‘‘We wanted to ensure Tocumwal didn’t have the ability to dominate the competition, in particular our smaller clubs.
Tocumwal’s proposed switch was put to a vote during a special members meeting in August. Almost 90 per cent of votes received backed the move.
It was the second meeting called by the embattled club after the first (on July 17) failed to reach the required 75 per cent majority needed to progress.
The move will see the North West division transform into a nine-team competition, with clubs set to play each other twice during an 18-round 2014 season.
The Bloods’ renowned home ground, which has played host to the MFL grand final for ‘‘over 25 years’’, will not see a finals game next season, with the PDFL’s eight-year rotation system sending Tocumwal to the back of the queue.
The club will host an elimination final in 2015 and will ‘‘work its way up from there’’.
