Thousands turned out at Echuca racecourse yesterday to witness district trainers record mixed results at Echuca Racing Club’s Melbourne Cup day races.

A thunderstorm threatened to derail the final two races, but as the weather eased the rest of the day’s racing continued.

Echuca trainer Daryl Archard was the pick of the district trainers, with his mare Ferocious One making it three straight wins by taking out the race five sprint over 1000m by half a length from Chantoozie and the Gwenda Johnstone-trained Beauty Cash.

Fashions On The Field finalists Lady Of The Day Winner Hayley Bell, Runner Up Elise Kornmann.

Archard’s gelding Layne, who won at the same meet last year, ran second to Lorrie’s Gift in the race six 0-58 handicap over 1200m.

Johnstone’s gelding Immaculate Choice ran fourth in the same race, while her mare She’s Got Grunt had to settle for third in the race two sprint over 1000m.

Like Green Moon’s win in the Melbourne Cup, punters were left stunned as Comical Time won that race at long odds.

Club chief executive officer Garry Armstrong said the club halted racing for the jockeys’ safety as lightning passed the racecourse.

He said while some racegoers left the track when the rain arrived about 4.30pm, many hung around to lap up the rest of the day.

‘‘When the rain came they all huddled in under the covers and once it cleared up they all spilled back onto the grass,’’ he said.

‘‘It’s once of those things, you can plan everything but you can’t plan the weather.

‘‘But if it had to come at any time, after four o’clock isn’t so bad.’’

Armstrong was rapt for Archard’s win in race five, saying he congratulated the trainer after a good day on the track.

It was Armstrong’s final meet as chief executive officer of the club before he moves to Rockhampton to take up a similar role at the Queensland club.

Other winners on the day included Towan, Laura’s Avenue, I Feel Good and Artie Royale.
