Mick McInnes has been appointed as Mathoura Football Club's coach for season 2014.By Luke McManus
Mick McInnes hopes to lead Mathoura Football Club ‘‘back up to where they belong’’.
McInnes was officially appointed as the club’s new senior coach by the Timbercutters board on Thursday night, signing a one-year deal (with an option for an extension), replacing the outgoing Ben Makepeace.
McInnes joins the Timbercutters after three years with Rochester, working as an assistant to senior coach Peter White, as well as coaching Echuca United’s under 18s side, and an eight-year stint with the Bendigo Pioneers.
McInnes said he was looking forward to starting the next chapter of his coaching career with Mathoura, and emphasised his experience with junior development — now an integral part of his coaching philosophy — as a key to the club’s improvement.
‘‘I’m looking forward to the challenge ahead of me,’’ McInnes said.
‘‘Obviously it will be a big challenge, but I’m excited about what we can achieve next year.
‘‘The work they’ve done the past couple of years with their juniors will help immensely.
‘‘They’ve been a strong club for a number of years and our aim will be to get them back up there again.
‘‘We want to develop all areas of the club, incorporate a bit of professionalism in the way we go about things, but in particular we want to promote more juniors through our senior ranks.
‘‘Obviously Mathoura haven’t had a very good side in the last couple of years to do that, so we’re keen to attract some experienced players to the club to help our juniors translate through to the seniors.’’
Mathoura’s head of recruitment, Tim McCormick, said McInnes’ appointment should trigger more coaching and player signings in the coming weeks, as the club prepares to lift its senior grade, which managed only two wins in two seasons of football playing in the Picola and District Football League north west division.
‘‘Before we tried to do too much — recruiting wise — we needed a senior coach in place,’’ McCormick said.
‘‘Mick’s signing means we can now move forward
McCormick said McInnes’ involvement in the recruitment of a reserves, under 17 and under 14 coach, was ‘‘vital’’ and said the board sees McIness as ‘‘not only a senior coach, but a club coach’’.
