Echuca-Moama Lady Raiders remain alive in the Bendigo Amateur Soccer League Knockout Cup after a 6-2 win on Sunday.By Luke McManus
Three goals to Indre Christy gifted the Moama-Echuca Lady Raiders a 6-2 win in their Bendigo Amateur Soccer League Knockout Cup quarter-final against Strathdale on Sunday.
Christy was instrumental in front of goals at Jack Eddy Oval, scoring a second half hat-trick to book her side a semi-final date with Colts United this weekend.
Christy combined well with Roweena Ilsley (two goals) and club leading goal scorer Eleanor Denson (one goal), who gave the Lady Raiders the perfect start against the title holders.
Ilsley goalled after the eighth minute, making the most of a superb cross from Tahlia Powell, while a bundled effort by a Strathdale defender handed Denson her 14th goal for the season late in the half.
Lady Raiders coach Daryl Brown said his players worked really well as a collective and stuck to the game plan of running the opposition off their feet.
‘‘The win is pretty satisfying,’’ he said.
‘‘It was nice to be the first team to put six goals past the championship holders.
‘‘Because Strathdale were short, our plan was to share the ball around, maintain possession and run the opposition around.
‘‘Even though Strathdale scored the first goal after half-time to be only one goal behind, I wasn’t too concerned.
‘‘Strathdale still wasn’t getting a lot of goal scoring opportunities.’’
On top of the Raiders’ do-or-die clash with Colts United on Sunday, Brown is coaching the Echuca-Moama under 14 girls side in their knockout cup grand final against Castlemaine on Saturday.
