Echuca coach Betty McCoomb and her North Central 15 and under side has claimed to the state championship, in an upset finish to the competition.
Yesterday, Echuca netball coach Betty McCoomb was still coming to terms with the fact she coached a North Central squad to a state championship.
The 15 and under side, featuring Echuca’s Abby Poulton, Eve Gregor and Dearnah Kent, saved its best netball for the semi-final and grand final.
The team came from fourth spot on the ladder to claim the upset result.
The weekend started with a narrow 13-11 loss against Goulburn, before winning four of the remaining six games on Saturday.
The team continued its good form on Sunday to win four of the first five games, before falling 18-9 to Elmore in the last round before finals.
However it was enough for the team to earn a finals berth in fourth spot, where it played undefeated Henderson in the semi-final.
After losing 17-11 to Henderson on Saturday, the team pulled off a great result to overcome the favourites 19-16, before reversing their previous result to Elmer with a gutsy 12-9 win.
‘‘In the semi-final we intercepted the opposition’s first centre pass and were able to hold onto the lead from there,’’ she said.
‘‘Against Elmer we did the same. We also had a couple of good intercepts to start the second half,’’ McCoomb said.
She said all of her players performed well throughout the weekend.
‘‘The team played in 16 matches during the two days. It was hard to fault any of the 10 players in the team, as they played well throughout the competition,’’ she said.
‘‘Some of the girls are now looking for places in the Northern Academy, which is a pathway into state teams. So this is the highest level this team can play in at this age.
‘‘The team had trained together one night a week for 10 weeks. We tried to play a lot of practice matches to help build the team spirit and I think it worked.’’
Echuca netballers Maddy Ruggles and Amy Gledhill competed in the 17 and under team which had a tough battle in its division, finishing 11th out of 15 teams and was one of four teams to capture six wins.
The girls only defeated Wimmera-Mallee and Dandenong Valley in their first seven games, before winning their final two games on the Saturday against Two Bays and Western.
The 17 and under team finished well to win two of its last three games. Chisholm defeated Latrobe Valley 17-8 in the final.
