Gunbower Racing Club president Michael Farrant is confident of a great day for racegoers at tomorrow's Gunbower Golf Cup.By Geordie Cowan
The phrase ‘third time lucky’ is one which Gunbower Racing Club president Michael Farrant hopes will hold true for tomorrow’s Gunbower Gold Cup meet.
The cup has suffered through a replayed AFL grand final and consecutive washouts since its move in 2010 from its slot in January to October.
‘‘I think we’ve done the penance and we’re about to be shined upon and not rained upon,’’ Farrant said.
‘‘High heels are the order of the day — don’t bring gumboots.’’
In the event’s 133rd year, the president said he was expecting a ‘‘really good’’ walk-up crowd after fielding inquiries from all around Victoria.
‘‘We have advertised heavily this year and pushed it out across the region, so it will be nice to see it come to fruition,’’ Farrant said.
The Cup Eve ball is unlikely to run after returning last year, with numbers down due to the Deni Ute Muster, Elmore Field Days and a ‘‘massive hay season in progress’’.
Farrant said the track, under the guidance of curator Jim Lake and with help from Echuca Racing Club, was looking magnificent, while there were almost full fields throughout the meet.
Many children’s activities will also be run throughout the day,
Farrant thanked the club’s supporters and the committee, who have been ‘‘really good’’.
‘‘It was a bit of a blow getting washed out last year, dampened the spirits, but I have been really pleased by the way the committee has fronted up again and the place out here looks a picture,’’ he said.
The first race will be at 1.37pm, with the last at 5.37pm, while the Gold Cup will run at 4.57pm.
