Mick Gulson will forever be a hero of Echuca-Moama Hockey Club.
Coach, player, former president and the main man behind the club’s new home at Echuca College, Gulson’s accolades reflect only a snippet of how much he means to the River Rats.
‘‘He’s the backbone of the hockey club,’’ EMHC president Scott Robinson said.
‘‘The synthetic turf, recruitment, senior and junior development
‘‘We wouldn’t be where we are today without him.’’
Gulson, 46, can now add a 2013 Heroes of Hockey nomination to the list.
In conjunction with the State Government, Hockey Victoria this week selected Gulson, and 13 other regional volunteers across the state, for the annual award in recognition for his tireless services to the sport.
‘‘At the end of the day, you don’t do it for the individual awards,’’ Gulson said.
‘‘You do it for the love of the game.
‘‘My father always told me, you get out of it what you put in.
‘‘I’m proud to be nominated but that’s not why I do it.’’
In a career spanning 24 years, Gulson has been influential on and off the hockey field.
During his reign as president ‘‘for the last eight or nine years and a few before that’’, Gulson was the driving force behind the construction of the $1.15
Because of Gulson’s efforts, the hockey club now has turf to call home and is now arguably the strongest club in the Goulburn Valley Hockey Association, with seven of its nine teams on top of the ladder this season.
Gulson stepped down as president last year to concentrate on coaching the senior men’s and under 17s teams, as well as his passion for junior development.
