Father-and-son combination Gary and Mitch Langdon will umpire the HDFL grand final today.By Geordie Cowan
Today’s senior Heathcote and District Football League grand final will also be a special occasion for more than just the footballers.
Echuca father-and-son combination Gary and Mitch Langdon will be two of the three central umpires of the game between Lockington-Bamawm United and Huntly, along with Bevan Main.
‘‘It’s a fairly emotional time for both of us,’’ Gary said.
‘‘It’s a highlight of my career.
‘‘You build your relationships with most of your umpires but to be selected with Mitch is paramount when it comes to highlights.
‘‘You win awards and stuff, but to umpire with your son in a senior grand final of the Heathcote and District Football League is something a bit special as well.’’
The pair have umpired together before, first in the qualifying final in 2012 and a further two games in 2013.
Mitch, 17, who is in his sixth year umpiring and fourth as central, said selection was a shock.
‘‘I wasn’t expecting it ... but it was good to know I’ll be doing it with my dad and other good friend (Main) as well,’’ the year 11 Moama Anglican Grammar student said.
The umpires were chosen by three independent Rochester and Echuca Football Umpires Association selectors.
Gary, 49, said that was another pleasing part of the selection.
‘‘That’s satisfying in itself, knowing that you’re being rewarded for your performance throughout the year,’’ he said.
‘‘It should be a really good game too. Very hard-fought game, I reckon.’’
