Echuca Primary School’s girls soccer team finished third in their pool at the School Sport Victoria state finals at the Darebin International Sports Centre in Melbourne recently.
Competing in Pool B against three other schools, Echuca drew against Bairnsdale (1-1) and eventual winners Williamstown (0-0), but lost their final game against Burwood’s Mount Scopus Memorial College (2-2), narrowly missing out on a place in the grand final.
Coach Darryl Brown said the girls, who progressed at the lower regional and interschool levels prior to the event, exceeded expectations.
‘‘They didn’t have much experience but it didn’t matter,’’ he said.
‘‘The girls had so much fun and we’re rapt with how they performed.
‘‘We had about seven training sessions prior to the finals to learn the structures and for me to teach them some knowledge about what I wanted them to do on the field.
‘‘Considering the high standard of soccer, they did the school proud.’’
Brown, the man in charge of the senior and under 14 Lady Raiders teams, hopes the experience will encourage the girls to take up the sport at the local level and join Echuca-Moama Soccer Club.
‘‘Hopefully,’’ he said. ‘‘A few of them have already said they wanted to join which is good to see.
‘‘I need more girls coming through so we can keep developing as a club, grow our juniors and so our senior grades are healthy over the next five to 10 years.’’
It still might be 12 months away, but Brown is already nominating himself for the job for next year’s competition, saying he ‘‘had the time of his life’’.
