Six Echuca basketballers have been chosen for Country Victorian teams.By Geordie Cowan
Echuca’s footprint in regional Victoria’s junior basketball ranks continues to flourish after six juniors were selected for Country Victorian teams.
Gemma Osborne and Lachlan Chumbley will play in under 16 teams at the Australian Country Junior Basketball Cup, while Matthew Hore, Mathew Lias, Luke Rosendale and Olivia Taverna have been selected for under 14 teams at the Southern Cross Challenge.
‘‘They have been selected in the top 20 athletes for their age group in Country Victoria,’’ Echuca Basketball Association coaching director Chris Clyne said.
‘‘It is fantastic for them.’’
Clyne said the selections bolstered what had been a strong start to the representative season for Echuca-Moama.
‘‘We normally don’t have that many under 14s (nine) make it to the Gold Nugget camp, so
‘‘With the three under 14 boys going through, it shows why the under 14 representative team has won two tournaments in a row.’’
Such impressive results boded well for the program at Echuca, Clyne said.
‘‘The juniors are developing fantastically,’’ he said.
‘‘There is a lot of good talent there across all teams and both genders.
‘‘The next few years will be an exciting time.
‘‘When these younger players get up to under 16s, under 18s and CBL (Country Basketball League), it is going to be a very exciting time for Echuca basketball.’’
The under 14s will compete at the State Basketball Centre in Wantirna, while the under 16s — who were selected at a try-out weekend recently — will play in Albury.
Both tournaments will be held in mid-January.
