Cricket associations to decide Tuesday
A final decision on whether to go ahead with a proposed merger between Campaspe Cricket Association and the Kyabram District Cricket Association will be made next week.
By Chris CavanaghThe news follows a meeting on Wednesday night between the CCA, representatives from its clubs and the KDCA board at which lingering issues with the proposal were discussed.
CCA clubs have now been given until Tuesday to submit their final vote on the merger, which could see either the A grade competitions of the respective associations merged or the entire senior competitions become one.
A CCA board meeting on Wednesday night will count the votes, after which time a final decision will be made.
CCA president Kirk Teasdale said this week’s meeting had gone well, with club representatives firing their questions and concerns at both associations.
‘‘We gave each club the opportunity to fire questions at them (three KDCA representatives)
‘‘The votes will be done by Tuesday next week and we’ll see where we go from there.’’
Teasdale said one of the club’s major concerns was that the current competition had been dominated by two clubs for the past decade — Moama and Echuca.
‘‘Other clubs are going ‘if we’re in a 12-team competition, it’s going to be harder to win premierships’, especially with a couple of strong Ky clubs as well,’’ he said.
However, Teasdale added that a somewhat negative line of questioning by unsure clubs was to be expected.
‘‘It’s only human nature I suppose that people pick the negatives,’’ he said.
‘‘If you haven’t got the negatives sussed out and can turn it into a positive, you’ve got issues.’’
Teasdale said his personal view was that the negatives were outweighed by the positives.
While the KDCA has been approached by the Shepparton and Murray Valley cricket associations over the past week regarding similar mergers, the CCA remains their preferred option.
‘‘At the end of the day, they want to merge with us because they thing it’s a good fit,’’ Teasdale said.
‘‘But if we don’t, I think we’ll have missed the boat.’’
