Bendigo Football Netball League officials will speak to the Echuca Football Club about the possibility of a move from the Goulburn Valley Football League.By Geordie Cowan
Echuca Football Club has been approached by Bendigo Football League regarding a possible move from the Goulburn Valley Football League.
‘‘They contacted us and we said we’d listen to them in the next few weeks,’’ Echuca president Brett Stevens said.
‘‘We haven’t set a time or a date, just that it happens at the end of our season.
‘‘It is no more than that at this stage.’’
Stevens said it was ‘‘highly unlikely’’ the club would make the move to Bendigo, but that Echuca would consider all its options.
‘‘My initial thoughts were ‘why would we be interested?’, but as a committee, we thought ‘why not listen to them?’,’’ he said.
‘‘There are a lot of things involved as well as football, such as netball and junior footy.
‘‘We haven’t spoken to the junior footy club.
‘‘The committee had a bit of a chat about it, but what have we got to lose?’’
Rumours of an Echuca move to Bendigo have been around for a long time and Stevens was asked about that possibility during an interview on radio in round two this year.
‘‘It happens to fringe clubs,’’ he said.
‘‘But the reality is they’re (Bendigo) a lower-ranked league and that in itself is a negative.
‘‘But they’ll tell us — that’s why we’ll listen.’’
Echuca played in the Bendigo league until 1974, when it joined the GVFL.
