Todd's boys looking for a win
Juniors Combine will aim for an outright win against Mathoura tomorrow.
By Shaun ConnorDespite going down in the first innings, Juniors Combine will look for an outright win against Mathoura in day two of their Deniliquin District Cricket Association A grade clash tomorrow.
Juniors will take on the Timbercutters at Memorial Park’s No. 1 oval, while RSL/West will head to Jerilderie.
The Combine didn’t get off to the best start last weekend, losing two quick wickets to be struggling at 2/18.
Skipper Brad Todd (19) and first-gamer Shaun Owen (14) steadied the ship somewhat but Mathoura fought back to claim the next five wickets for just 11 runs.
Further down the order, Phil Burn and Justin Parker made 16 runs each before Juniors were bowled out for 110.
The Cutters then zoomed passed Juniors’ total to post a first innings lead of 36 runs.
In order for Juniors to win outright, it will have to make up the difference in runs, set Mathoura a target and then bowl them out.
Todd said his side would be looking to post a score close to 200 tomorrow. If his charges do just that, an outright win could well be on the cards.
Jerilderie v RSL/West
Home team Jerilderie batted first last weekend and had an innings it would prefer to forget.
Joel Bryce, Chris Lockhart and Lachlan Taylor-Nugent all made quick exits, while the top four batsmen could only muster an aggregate of 15.
Lacie Leeds (17) showed some resistance, but when he was dismissed the innings crumbled away.
The Demons were all out for 63, with Brenton Loudon (3-5) and Brian King (2-8) the destroyers.
RSL/West’s batting depth ensured it had no trouble building a big first innings lead.
Loudon (44) was the mainstay at the top of the innings, but it was the work of Tim Hillier (23), Anthony Bradley (21) and Scott Checkley (32) that really got the total climbing.
Grant-Patrick Smith was Jerilderie’s only multiple wicket taker with 2-11.
Leading by 121 runs, the Cannons can either build on their total, or declare and have a full day to bundle out Jerilderie again and, if necessary, make the runs required for outright victory.
There is little doubt they will get the outright points.
