Hundreds of golfers will converge on the Deniliquin Golf Club for the Riverina Ladies Golf Association Championships next week.
A full field of golfers will be competing at Deniliquin this weekend for the annual Riverina Ladies Golf Association Championships.
Golfers from all across NSW are taking part in the event, which is being staged locally for the first time since 2002.
Deniliquin ladies’ captain and RLGA life member Gail O’Halloran said hosting the well-known tournament is a feather in the cap for the local area.
‘‘We are very pleased with the number of players attending and are looking forward to seeing some good scores,’’ O’Halloran said.
‘‘(Head greenskeeper) Terry Howe and the club’s staff and volunteers have worked hard to have the course up to scratch and it’s looking fantastic.
‘‘The new Terry Howe-designed green on the 8th will be in play and it looks very tough.
‘‘Us local golfers won’t have any advantage on the new green though, because we haven’t played on it yet either.’’
The massive four days of golfing action starts on Monday morning with 135 players teeing off at 7.31am.
Those with handicaps between 0-18 start first in the 54-hole championship.
Players with handicaps between 19-30 are battling for the Wray-McLeish Salver and the Pyke-Everitt Cup.
There is also 35 golfers in the Bronze section playing stableford on Monday and Tuesday.
A presentation dinner will be held at the Golf Club on Wednesday night, while the four-day event concludes with a foursomes competition the following day.
O’Halloran said there were still spots available for the Thursday event.
‘‘Entries for the foursomes event are open right up until the day,’’ she said.
From the field, some of the favourites include defending champion Glenda Hoskin from Howlong and Viv Burton from Leeton.
Hoskin plays off an eight handicap and her club mate Sue Eisenhauer, who plays off seven, is also in with a chance.
Playing off a handicap of nine, Narrandera’s Rosemary Orr will be pushing the leaders all week.
More than 30 local golfers will be playing in the tournament with the leading chance being O’Halloran, who has won both the open and Riverina championships previously.
‘‘It’s going to be a great event,’’ O’Halloran said.
‘‘We’d like to welcome all of our visitors, including (RLGA) president Margaret Playford, captain Carolyn Martin and all the executives.
‘‘And a special welcome to Jean Moran from Golf NSW.’’
A RLGA captains and committee meeting will be held at the Golf Club from 3.45pm this Sunday with an annual general meeting at 5pm.
