Deniliquin Rovers name recruits, captain
The Deniliquin Rovers have named key-forward Terry Lumbar as senior skipper for the 2012 Picola and District Football League season.
The Deniliquin Rovers have named key-forward Terry Lumbar as senior skipper for the 2012 Picola and District Football League season.
Rovers playing-coach Luke Moodie made the announcement at training on Tuesday night.
Lumbar, who should knock up his 150th senior game this year, booted 67 goals last season to mark himself as one of the best forwards in the league.
Moodie said he had no doubts that the 26 year-old was the right man for the job.
‘‘I just think Terry ticked all the right boxes and was at the right age where he could take on the role.
‘‘He takes his footy very seriously and is a responsible trainer and player.’’
The club has also secured two key signings heading into the season with midfielders Guy Booker and Matt Ryan committing to the club for the 2012 season.
Booker, 36, played for Melton last year in the Ballarat Football League after coaching Kilmore in 2009 and 2010.
The experienced captain-coach took out Kilmore’s 2009 best and fairest despite playing just 14 games.
‘‘It’s great to have them playing for us,’’ Moodie said.
‘‘They’ve both played some pretty good levels of footy.
‘‘Guy played in Balranald’s 2006 flag with Andrew May and is a bit more of an established player.
‘‘Matt’s only 22 and has played for Whittlesea in the Northern Football League since he was in under-8s. He wants to have a fair crack at country footy.’’
The pair, who live together in Craigieburn, will lace up for the Rovers in the Barooga Night series next month.
‘‘At this stage the two night series games are our only practice matches,’’ Moodie said.
‘‘The draw hasn’t been finalised yet, so we aren’t too sure who we will be up against.
‘‘But we do know that we will be playing on the 12th and 19th of March.’’
