Redeyes' under-17 captain Demi Blake has twice finished runner-up in the PDNL vote count, but on Monday night she finally took out the medal.
Young Blighty netballer Demi Blake has taken out the Picola and District Netball League’s north-west under-17 best and fairest.
Blake, 16, racked up a staggering 38 votes to take out the coveted honour at the league’s junior vote count, which was held at Picola on Monday night.
Winning the award was a bit of a relief for the Redeyes captain after she finished runner-up last year and in the under-15s the year before that.
The star mid-courter said she had no idea she was even in line to win the award.
‘‘It was a big surprise really, because I didn’t think I had played that good this year,’’ she said.
‘‘But it was nice to finally win it after finishing runner-up two years in a row.’’
The young gun, who has won two club best and fairest awards with the Redeyes and one runner-up, was a clear winner on Monday night with Picola United’s Kiara Cooper nine votes behind her.
There is no doubt this has been a breakthrough season for Blake, with the Deniliquin High School student representing the Picola league and NSW in the Regional State League.
This is her fourth season with the Redeyes and she is now a regular in the club’s A grade side.
‘‘I have played a fair bit of A grade this season but I made it a priority to play every under-17s game because this is my last year in the juniors,’’ she said.
Blake’s under-17s finished the home-and-away season in fifth spot and take on Jerilderie in the elimination final on Sunday.
Tomorrow, Blighty’s A grade plays the Deni Rovers in the qualifying final.
‘‘We might have a win this week (in the under-17s) but it will be tough to go all the way.’’
Mathoura’s Gracie Berryman was third in the under-17s vote count, while in other grades, Blighty’s Georgia Bradford snared runner-up in the under-15s and Deni’s Jamie Henson was fifth in under-13s.
