Barooga still on top of MVCA ladder

Berrigan/Finley falters against top cricket side

Round 12 was completed with Barooga and Waaia obtaining outright victories to shore up top spot and a finals berth respectively.

Strathmerton also had a win over Nathalia to keep its chances for a finals position alive.

Berrigan/Finley v Barooga

At Finley, Barooga batted on for three overs losing Daniel Davis (40) and Imran Arif (60) before declaring its innings closed giving Berrigan/Finley the tough assignment to bat the rest of the 77 overs left in the day.

Arif struck early to have Tom Sinclair and Dan Hickey out before Daniel Hibberd (41) and Paul Massingham (19) put together a tidy partnership getting the score to 81.

Anton Noble (3-24) and Matthew Jaensch (3-0) combined to rip through the remaining Combine batsmen as they lost 6-5 and be rolled for 86.

The outright victory has Barooga clearly on top of the ladder.

Waaia v Cobram-Yarroweyah United

Waaia took on Cobram-Yarroweyah and received outright points which will all but secure them a finals berth.

Resuming 40 runs behind United’s total of 158, Waaia was quickly into its stride looking for quick runs.

After Greg Meyland (61) went early, Alex Osmond to over to score a quick fire 61 not out, enabling skipper Dave Gilmour to declare at 7-198 and leave 62 overs to obtain full points.

United again collapsed for 98 against Osmond (4-33) and Dylan Grandell (3-10) to give the home side 18 overs to score 60 runs. This was duly achieved with Osmond, completing a good match, 27 not out with support from Grandell 18 not out.

Strathmerton v Nathalia

Strathmerton, requiring a win to keep its finals hopes alive, had made 249 the previous week.

Tom Glover (three wickets) and Mark Haberfield (two wickets) were the Strath’s best bowlers as they dismissed Nathalia for 177.

Ash Quinn made a well compiled 50, but not enough Nathalia batsmen scored sufficient runs to trouble the Strathmerton side.

There were 14 overs left for Strathmerton to bat and they went out chasing runs.

At the close of play the home team had reached 2-77 with Luke Carter completing a fine double, reaching 47 not out.

No others scores had been recorded at the time of print.
